6 Tips For Dealing With Kindergartener Separation Anxiety

It’s perfectly normal for your kindergartener to experience some anxiety when separated from you, especially if they are starting kindergarten in Bedok for the first time. Here are 6 tips to help your child (and you!) cope with separation anxiety.

  • Talk about school in a positive way: You can help your child feel more comfortable about going to school by talking about it in a positive way. Explain what they will be doing during the day and how much fun they will have. Try to avoid using words like “stay” or “alone,” which can make them feel anxious. You should also avoid talking about your own Separation Anxiety Disorder in front of your child, as this may make them more anxious.
  • Reassure them that you will be there to pick them up: It can help to reassure your child that you will be there to pick them up after school. You can even set up a special signal or phrase that you will use when you come to get them so they know it is you. You can also give them a hug and kiss before you leave so they know you will be coming back.
  • Visit the school together: A few days before your child’s first day of school, take them for a visit so they can see their classroom and meet their teacher. This will help them feel more familiar with their surroundings and less anxious on their first day. 
  • Make a goodbye ritual: Developing a short ritual that you do every morning before dropping your child off at school can help ease their anxiety. This could be something as simple as giving them a hug and kiss, saying a special phrase, or reading a favorite book together. 
  • Be patient: It may take some time for your child to adjust to being away from you during the day. Be patient and understanding while they get used to this new routine. 
  • Seek support: If you are struggling to deal with your own anxiety about leaving your child at school, don’t hesitate to reach out to other parents or your child’s teacher for support and advice. 


Starting preschool is a big milestone for both you and your child! It’s normal for them to experience some separation anxiety, but there are things you can do to help ease their fears. By talking about school in a positive way, visiting the school together, making a goodbye ritual, being patient, and seeking support when needed, you can help your child (and yourself!) cope with separation anxiety and have a successful year ahead!
